To celebrate serviceberry and mulberry season, CFFC and the Montgomery College permaculture club are hosting a free pancake breakfast at the Montgomery College Food Forest this Sunday from 8am to 9.30am.
We’ll be making pancakes with mulberries and serviceberries and serving them up with local honey and Maryland maple syrup (yes, we can produce maple syrup here in Maryland too!).
Donations are always welcome but the pancakes are free, and we’ll have gluten free and vegan options too. We’ll also have raw honey from a local beekeeper for sale.
And if you know a good source of mulberries or serviceberries, then please do harvest and bring some to share!
Where: Montgomery College Food Forest, 7719 Chicago Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, 20910
When: 8am to 9.30am, Sunday June 1, 2025
And if you’re new to the serviceberry, Robin Wall Kimmerer describes it as “a blueberry crossed with the satisfying heft of an apple, a touch of rosewater and a minuscule crunch of almond-flavored seeds. They taste like nothing a grocery store has to offer: wild, complex with a chemistry that your body recognizes as the real food it’s been waiting for.”
Check out the rest of Kimmerer’s stunning essay on the serviceberry, a beautiful meditation on the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy.
See you in the food forest!
